Dongshan Shaoye Plaza, in Dongshankou, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, is a key urban node that connects the commercial axis, residents’ daily life, and access to the Xinhepu Historic Preservation Area. Renovated in 2000, it retained lush vegetation but low-quality facilities, limited user diversity, and inadequate maintenance, which created hygiene and security issues.

The upgrade reshapes circulation from rigid linear paths to exploratory curves, inviting residents to use the plaza as an extension of their living room while attracting visitors to experience Dongshan’s culture. Trees structure the three-dimensional space: Madagascar almond trees allow layered sunlight to filter through, creating dappled light, clear sightlines, and a calm atmosphere. Grass is elevated to match sitting height, encouraging interaction, while urban furniture functions as seating, tree ponds, circulation guides, and playful tracks for children, blending utility with spatial definition.

Smooth stone surfaces reflect the canopy, and curved forms with light create subtle grace. Day and night, the plaza offers dynamic experiences: evening lighting highlights lawns and seating, providing a warm, restorative environment for residents after work.

The plaza’s final form emerges from user behavior guided by design interventions, temporal dynamics, and long-term maintenance. This approach ensures lasting vitality, fosters community engagement, and facilitates cultural transmission, activating energy flows from one public node to the next, making Dongshan Shaoye Plaza a vibrant, multifunctional, and enduring urban space.
